Bugs n Slugs was showcasing its services at the 2003 SASTA Conference at
Adelaide's Saint Ignatius' College on the 14th and 15th of April. A Bugs n
Slugs display stand allowed delegates to ask us questions and view some of
the exciting live animals we use daily in our education programs.
Bugs n Slugs Workshops
How to use invertebrate
animals in the classroom with maximum learning outcomes
Abstract
This workshop is ideal for both science
teachers and school laboratory technicians. The primary and secondary Life
Systems curriculum for South Australian schools, contains many learning
outcomes that may be difficult to achieve with regular teaching methods.
We feel that a large proportion of Life System learnings are best conveyed
by studying invertebrate animals in the classroom.
In this workshop we discuss a few learning
examples from the primary and secondary curriculum. We will demonstrate
how you can use easily available insects and other invertebrate animals in
the classroom to explain complex scientific concepts such as
metamorphosis, life histories, life cycles, growth, nutrition,
population dynamics, scientific classification, biodiversity, ecosystem
health and services, bioethics and much more. |
