Cyclone Larry Stick Insect – Female

Cyclone Larry stick insects are found in the rainforests of North Queensland. They are named after the Cyclone (Larry) that led to their discovery after specimens were blown down from the rainforest canopy.

Cyclone Larry stick insects (Sipyloidea larryi) are found in the rainforests of North Queensland. They are named after the Cyclone (Larry) that led to their discovery after specimens were blown down from the rainforest canopy. Adult females achieve a length of approximately 8 – 11 cm and resemble the dry, curled edges of palm leaves. Both sexes possess fully developed wings and will fly gently when disturbed. In flight they are easily confused with fairies! Cyclone Larry’s are a good beginner stick insect as they are tolerant of a wide range of conditions and they feed on a variety of native plants including (but not limited to) Syzygium (lily pilly), Agonis (weeping myrtle) and Eucalyptus (gum). Females are known to be parthenogenetic. Cyclone Larry’s live for about a year. They develop quickly and will reach maturity after a few months.
